An analysis of fevers of unknown origin in American soldiers in Vietnam

Autor(es): Deller J J, Russell P K

Resumo: A number of febrile diseases endemic in Vietnam are characterized by the sudden onset of high fever, chills, and headache. Although the classical varieties of the arborvirus diseases, scrub typhus and malaria, as well as a number of other tropical febrile illnesses, have been well described (1-7), the differential diagnosis of these tropical diseases remains a real challenge. In an attempt to define these "fevers of unknown origin," 110 patients presenting in this fashion in whom a more precise diagnosis could not be made within 24 hr of admission to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh, South Vietnam, were studied.
