Resumo: In their excellent Seminar (Nov 5, p 1653)1, Richard Hughes and David Cornblath do not emphasise the role of HIV infection in Guillain-Barré syndrome. HIV infection is a common cause of the syndrome in African countries, India, and other developing nations.2 In a prospective study of 32 consecutive patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome, 27 tested positive for HIV.2 HIV-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome has been reported since 1985.
