Viral interference with exoerythrocytic forms of malaria (Plasmodium gallinaceum) in ovo

Resumo: The effect of viral infection on subsequent infection by the avian malaria parasite, Plasmodium gallinaceum, was studied in chick embryos. Chikungunya virus infection protected embryos against multiplication of P. gallinaceum. This protection was associated with induction of strong interference but minimal amounts of interferon. In comparison, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) provided no protection and induced neither interference nor detectable interferon in ovo. However, NDV protected young chicks against P. gallinaceum. The results indicate that the relationship of the interferon mechanism to the observations on viral interference with malarial growth remains uncertain.
