Resumo: Prior to establishment of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Ibadan in 1964, few arboviruses had been isolated in Nigeria. Only 4 arboviruses had been recovered from humans: yellow fever, from epidemics in Ogbomosho in 1946 and in Eastern Nigeria in 1951 and 1953; Spondweni, from a febrile patient in Eastern Nigeria in 1952; Ilesha virus, from 3 Ilesha children with fevers in 1957; and a strain of Bunyamwera virus from a febrile adult in Lagos in 1960. The Virus Research Laboratory, as part of its program of surveillance of arbovirus activity in Nigeria, has routinely examined blood specimens from children with fevers of unknown origin attending the outpatient clinic at University College Hospital, Ibadan. On occasion, specimens have also been collected from patients at other clinics and hospitals in Ibadan and in other parts of the country. In addition, many materials have been submitted to the laboratory by physicians requesting virus studies. From these various sources, a total of 171 arbovirus isolations, representing 15 different viruses, were made during the years 1964 to 1970; some were isolated for the first time from man. The purpose of this paper is to give an account of these virus isolates and to present brief clinical descriptions, where available. During the same period there were55 nonarbovirus isolations (herpesvirus, coxsackievirus, rhabdovirus) from humans.
