Resumo: Case Management Systems are seen as critical to effective social work practice. Yet, if we explore foster care case management there are few examples. This paper explores what makes a successful case management system for foster care drawing on experience gained from work in 49 countries over 25 years. This paper explores what makes a good foster care case management system from practice experiences. Results Case management is defined in various ways across the social work sector. Vourlekis (1992) states case management is: ‘...a set of logical steps and a process of interaction within a service network which assure that a client receives needed services in a supportive, effective, efficient and cost effective way’’ (p2 :Weil et al 1985; quoted in Vourlekis 1992). It is also a process of record-keeping. In my view case management is a framework that records information, promotes consistent practice experience, and brings accountability. Its purpose is to answer a critical question: How does an organisation know you are producing good safe care relevant to the needs of each child? To answer this effectively there are three components to foster care case management: the first focuses on the child’s needs and the second focuses on the foster carers suitability and safety.
