Resumo: INTRODUTION : The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of the relationship between small and large companies in the diffusion process of new automation technologies and in the change of human resource management practices presently underway in the Brazilian industry. The problems treated in this section are related to two issues dealt with by economics and industrial sociology: the role of subcontracting and the possible tendency toward decentralizing industrial production. Some aspects related to this issue will be discussed, based on the discussion of the diffusion process of new industrial automation technology (specifically Numeric Control) and their effects on the management policies of the enterprises. Subcontracting usually implies a certain leveI of dependency on the service rendering enterprises in relation to their most important clients. On the other hand, the quality of the products produced by lhe contractors will to a certain extent be determined by the quality of the products delivered. This leads to a degree of monitoring over the productive process of their suppliers. Therefore, it is possible to work under the hypothesis that the efforts of clients to assure the quality of their suppliers' products tend to intensify the diffusion of automation technologies on the production levei and also to present new issues to small suppliers relating to the management of human resources. This paper is based on research carried out in 1987 and 1988 in a group of engineering companies in the interior of the State of São Paulo. The companies in the study can be divided into three categories: large service contracting companies (4), small- to medium-sized service-rendering companies (6), and one company supplying numeric control machine tools
